Basics For Making The Best Smoothie Bowls At Home

Updated: May 13, 2020

This total smoothie rundown will give you everything needed to start making delicious and thick smoothies every time. Kick those $10 smoothie bowls to the curb and start making them BETTER and HEALTHIER at home!

I love a good smoothie. It is a great quick meal option that you can make anytime of the day. Smoothies made at home are the best because

A. you can choose the ingredients you want to add

B. you can fit in servings of fruit, protein, and veggies all in one.

It is often tempting to buy a smoothie bowl at a restaurant. However, these options are mostly high in sugar content and EXPENSIVE. We are all about saving money when it comes to meals right? First step of becoming budget friendly with food: MAKE IT AT HOME.

The Perfect Smoothie Base

  • 1 cup frozen fruit of choice*

  • 1/2 frozen banana

  • 1/3 - 1/2 cup milk of your choice ( I use almond milk)

  • cinnamon to taste (optional)

Getting the perfect smoothie texture can be tricky. However, the trick is to start with small amounts of liquid then blending in increments. This way you can achieve the thick smoothie you want by slowly adding your liquid. The frozen banana is also a staple for creamy smoothies. It adds natural sweetness as well.

*Fruit combinations are endless and there really is no right or wrong choice. However I have found that these combinations are my favorite:

  • berry mix (frozen raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries)

  • tropical mix (mango, pineapple, strawberries)

  • green mix (green mix because this is the best to add spinach or frozen avocado to - pineapple, peach, mango, use orange juice as the liquid)

Options To Add To Your Blend

1. Whey protein is great for after workout smoothies because whey aids in repairing the torn muscles and tissue. This causes the muscle to grow and be stronger. This is the whey protein I use and you can order it off of Energy First's website here. This whey protein has no artificial sweeteners, flavors, or colors and it is non GMO.

2. Spirulina powder strengthens the immune system and boosts energy levels

3. Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory antioxidant propertied. There are so many health benefits from turmeric and it has also been proven to help with acne and eczema!

4. Spinach and kale are some veggies that blend nicely (plus you can't taste them!).

6. Frozen avocado adds to the creaminess of a smoothie and offers beneficial heart healthy fatty acids and potassium.

7. Oats adds substance to a smoothie to keep you satisfied for longer.

Toppings

1. More fruit! Berries, banana slices, strawberries etc.

2. Granola (try and find one that contains natural ingredients, avoid those with high sugar content)

3. Nuts (walnuts are high in omega 3s and help maintain a healthy gut)

4. Nut-butters

5. Shredded coconut (my personal favorite!!)

6. Bee pollen (can increase metabolism and improve skin health)

7. Goji berries (high level of antioxidants and improve immune system)

I hope these ideas allow you to get creative with your smoothie bowl ideas! Much Love XO
